The
2010 Schug Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Coast is a truly outstanding effort. Pale in color, the nose is a cornucopia of lemon, honeysuckle (certainly from the
Sauvignon Musque in the blend), ripe grapefruit and melon aromas and flavors. There's a fantastic richness on the palate that comes from
sur lie aging in neutral oak, but there's plenty of acidity in there to keep the wine from becoming too ponderous. The pleasantly herbaceous finish just doesn't quit.
This is my new benchmark for what domestic Sauvignon Blanc should taste like.
